JPA and Hibernate

JPA (Java Persistence API) is a standard specification in Java that provides a simple way to map Java objects to relational database tables using Object-Relational Mapping (ORM). Instead of writing SQL queries manually as in JDBC, developers can work with Java classes and objects, while JPA handles the conversion between objects and database records. Hibernate is one of the most widely used implementations of JPA and provides the underlying ORM functionality. In Spring Boot applications, Spring Data JPA works together with Hibernate to simplify database operations such as inserting, retrieving, updating, and deleting records. This approach reduces boilerplate JDBC code and makes database applications easier to develop and maintain.

Features of JPA and Hibernate

  1. Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) – Maps Java classes to database tables and Java fields to table columns.
  2. Less SQL Code – Common database operations can be performed without writing SQL queries manually.
  3. Entity Mapping – The @Entity annotation maps a Java class to a database table.
  4. Primary Key Mapping – The @Id annotation identifies the primary key of an entity.
  5. Automatic Table Operations – Hibernate generates SQL statements for operations such as INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, and DELETE.
  6. Repository Support – Spring Data JPA provides repositories such as JpaRepository for CRUD operations.
  7. Database Independence – Applications can work with different relational databases with minimal changes.
  8. Transaction Management – JPA and Spring provide support for managing database transactions.
  9. Query Support – Applications can use derived queries, JPQL, and native SQL queries.
  10. Relationship Mapping – Supports relationships such as @OneToOne, @OneToMany, @ManyToOne, and @ManyToMany.
  11. Caching – Hibernate provides first-level caching and supports second-level caching.
  12. Automatic Schema Management – Hibernate can create or update database tables based on entity definitions during development.

JDBC vs JPA/Hibernate

JDBC JPA + Hibernate
Developer writes SQL Hibernate generates SQL for common operations
Uses Connection Uses EntityManager internally
Uses PreparedStatement Uses repository/entity operations
Uses ResultSet Returns Java objects
More boilerplate code Less boilerplate
Manual object mapping Automatic object-relational mapping
Manual CRUD implementation JpaRepository provides CRUD
Database interaction is SQL-centric Database interaction is object-centric
