REST API Validation

REST API Validation is the process of checking incoming HTTP request data to ensure that it satisfies the required constraints before the application processes it. In Spring Boot, validation is commonly implemented using Jakarta Bean Validation annotations such as @NotBlank, @NotNull, @Email, @Size, @Min, and @Max. By applying @Valid to a request body parameter in a REST controller, Spring automatically validates the incoming data before executing the controller method. If the request contains invalid data, the application can return an appropriate HTTP status code, such as 400 Bad Request, along with meaningful validation error messages. This approach improves data quality, prevents invalid input from reaching business logic, and makes REST APIs more reliable and secure.

Features of REST API Validation

  1. Automatic Validation – Validates incoming request bodies using @Valid.

  2. Required Field Validation – Uses @NotBlank and @NotNull to check mandatory fields.

  3. Email Validation – Uses @Email to validate email address formats.

  4. Length Validation – Uses @Size to restrict the length of input values.

  5. Numeric Validation – Uses @Min, @Max, and @Positive to validate numeric values.

  6. Custom Error Messages – Provides meaningful messages when validation fails.

  7. HTTP Status Handling – Returns 400 Bad Request for invalid request data.

  8. Separation of Concerns – Keeps validation rules separate from business logic.

  9. Consistent API Responses – Returns structured error information to clients.

  10. Reusable Constraints – Applies validation rules across multiple REST endpoints.
